NaBloPoMo – Day 15a – Hypocrisy

I was thinking back on the recent issue of some people calling PRCs “Ah Tiong” in reference to them being “Tiong Kok Lang” (中国人) if I’m not wrong.

I was going to chide someone for calling another person Ah Tiong when I realised the hypocrisy of it – I’m guilty of using racist names in reference to people of other races too. And I’ve never so much as tried to stop anyone from using names like Ah bu neh neh, Geh-leng kia, Angmoh kui.

For some reason, seeing these names written down makes my skin crawl. It’s something so un-PC about it that unnerves me.

For reasons of personal morality, I resolve to be less racist now with the view of becoming almost non-racist in the long run. And I will gently tell anyone who uses such derogatory names to kindly stop doing that.

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn’t a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.
